The “Polar Vortex” Winter of 2013/2014

چکیده

The term “polar vortex” remained largely a technical until early January 2014 when the United States (US) media used it to describe an historical cold air outbreak in eastern North America. Since then, has been more frequently by and public, often conflating circulation features temperatures near surface with only partially related at tropopause stratosphere. polar vortex its most common scientific usage refers hemispheric-scale stratospheric over Arctic that is present during Northern Hemisphere season. Reversal of zonal mean winds circumnavigating (SPV), termed major sudden warmings, can be linked mid-latitude outbreaks. However, this mechanism does not explain US winter 2013/2014. This study revisits 2013/2014 understand how SPV variability may still have played role severe weather. Observations indicate anomalously strong vertical wave propagation occurred throughout disrupted, but did fully break, SPV. Instead, vertically propagating waves were reflected back downward, amplifying blocking high Alaska downstream troughing across central America, classic signature for extreme outbreaks Thus, association 2013/2014, while justified term, serves as case wave-reflection influence on

Vortex–Vortex Interactions in the Winter Stratosphere

This paper examines the interaction of oppositely signed vortices in the compressible (non-Boussinesq) quasigeostrophic system, with a view to understanding vortex interactions in the polar winter stratosphere. A series of simplifying approximations leads to a two-vortex system whose dynamical properties are determined principally by two parameters: the ratio of the circulation of the vortices ...

The Influence of the Solar Cycle and QBO on the Late Winter Stratospheric Polar Vortex

We conduct a statistical analysis of 51 years of NCEP/NCAR Reanalysis data to isolate the separate effects of the 11-year solar cycle (SC) and the equatorial Quasi-Biennial Oscillation (QBO) on the Northern Hemisphere stratosphere in late winter (February-March). In a four-group (SC-max vs. -min and eastvs. west-phase QBO) linear discriminant analysis, the state of the westerly phase QBO (wQBO)...
